Switching SidesĪfter signing the bill, Mills issued a statement that read, “This law provides meaningful economic opportunities for the Wabanaki Nations. The bill known as LD 585 allows for mobile and retail sports betting in the Pine Tree State and although it took approximately 18 months from the time the governor signed it until Friday’s launch, the wait is nearly over and Maine will now have another revenue source. Janet Mills was the governor who vetoed sports betting legislation in 2020 but she is also the same governor who signed it into law last year as part of an overarching tribal sovereignty package. According to a press release issued by the Maine Gambling Control Unit earlier this week, retail and mobile sports betting will launch at 9:00 AM ET this Friday, November 3, 2023. At long last, Maine’s sports betting market will be the latest to join the industry.
